O2MICRO GRANTED TWO POWER MANAGEMENT PATENTS

Date26-Apr-2001
O2Micro International Limited (NASDAQ:OIIM), a leading supplier of innovative power management ICs to mobile computer and communications manufacturers, has been granted two significant Power Management patents from the United States Patent Office.

Thermal management (patent number 6,198,245) provides a simplified methodology to control thermal emissions in complex mobile systems. This methodology uses a simplified technique to predict a system's thermal trend. This predicted thermal trend provides an improved approach for reducing electrical power consumption by a system's temperature control devices while ensuring the system's operability. This will result in highly efficient, next generation power management ICs with longer battery operating time for mobile applications.

"The award of this patent will enable O2Micro to enter into a new market area and establish a leading position in advanced thermal management of complex mobile applications", stated Sterling Du, O2Micro's Chairman and CEO.

The Intelligent Charger (patent number 6,184,660) provides for advanced charging of various battery chemistries in mobile applications. The Intelligent Charger methodology constantly monitors battery temperature, voltage and current to protect against over-voltage, under-voltage, over-temperature, and short circuit conditions. It supports up to 4 amps fast charge current, and extends battery-operating time with heightened efficiency.

"We are extremely pleased to receive this patent that will be the basis of many of our advanced Intelligent Charger designs," said Jack Shyr, Vice President of the Intelligent Power Group.
